I was good this year; I only spent $5 and only made one trip. Early afternoon turns out to be a decent time to go. The initial explosion of bibliophilic vultures has dissipated and the after-school bunch hasn’t arrived. Some friends say it was still busy at 1am, I have found 7am not bad and some people swear by 4am.
I found a decent fluid dynamics text, some early Heinlein crap and much other stuff. Cushla managed to find five out of the six books from the first two Thomas Covenant trilogies.
For those who are reading this from outside Dunedin: the Regent Theatre 24 Hour Booksale is an annual fundraising sale of donated books. Most of the books are sold for 50 cents and most of the rest for only a dollar or so. It starts at 12pm on Friday and goes until 12pm on Saturday. They had something like 300 000 books on offer this year. While there are broad categories, the books aren’t sorted and you just have to search for stuff that interests you – which makes it great fun, but very crowded.
